Background: Violence persists in West Bengal as India's General Election campaign reaches its closing stages. The States has been the scene of daily murders for some weeks. At least four candidates or prospective candidates have been murdered and there have been attempts on the life of several others. Much of the interest is centred on the contest in Baranagar Constituency near Calcutta. There, the Chief Minister of the last United Front Government, Mr. Ajoy Mukherjee of the Bangla Congress Party, is opposed by the former Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Jyoti Basu, the Marxist Communist Party leader. The election in West Bengal is on 10th. March.
This film sets the scene for one of the crucial contests in India's election. Yesterday (28th February) we syndicated an election round-up from the other side of India, PRODUCTION NO. 2326/71: "ELECTION CANDIDATES CAMPAIGN IN BOMBAY".
