Background: Top amateur cyclists of Congo Kinshasa have competed in the "Grand Prix du Zaire", a 120 kilometre (75 miles) road race, and a highlight on the cycling calendar.
The race started at the Albertum and took in two laps of a difficult 60 kilometre (38 mile) course. The talented field included Franky, Kebemba, Kibamba, Mandjambi and Morino. the early pace was quite slow with none of the competitors eager to go to the front. At the Gillar turning point Kabemba chose his moment and jumped out into the lead. Mubenga, Kibamba, Musao and Tabu took off in pursuit and by Ndjili had caught up with Kabemba again for a while.
As the pace quickened the field began to sort itself out into groups. Veteran rider Magema was putting in a determined bid as the event entered its final stages, but the effort of heading the field proved too much for him and he was eventually beaten into second place by the youthful Kibamba. or Kimbamba it was a victory which brought him congratulations, a cup, and the Grand Prix du Zaire title.
