  • Description

Vortices -- tornado-like patterns of air generated in the wake of jet 'planes -- are becoming a growing hazard for light aircraft. Scientists in Laurel, Maryland, are conducting tests on the invisible air masses. A six-foot (about two metres) model aircraft shoots dye into a 300-feet (about 100 metres) water tank in order to simulate the air currents while cameras record the event for future analysis.

The tests are the first to be done under controlled conditions. Until now research on vortices was based on full-size 'planes flying at low level past smoke towers.
