  • Description

Jack Nicklaus, current British Open Golf Champion, gained his fourth World Series win with a four under par total of 136 at the Firestone Country Club at Akron, Ohio on Sunday (September 13).

It was a disappointing tournament for Britain's Tony Jacklin, the U.S. Open Champion, who finished last with a two-round total of 141 -- one over par.

Joint runners-up were U.S. Masters Champion, Bill Casper and Professional Gold Association Champion, Dave Stockton, both on 139.

His win earned Nicklaus a 50,000 Dollar cheque, with Casper and Stockton taking 11,500 Dollars each, and Jacklin a consolation prize of 5,000 Dollars.

Nicklaus took a three stroke lead with a 66 in the first round on Saturday (September 12), but saw it disappear the following day when he played a three over par 38 on the first nine holes.

This gave him a tie for the lead with Stockton at one under par, and the score stayed that way until the 13th hole. Then Nicklaus got into magnificent putting form which gave him three birdies in the last six holes, and saved him a critical par at the par-three 15th where he holed his putt from 18 feet (5 1/2 meters).

Jacklin's rounds of 71 and 70 were two of his best ever on the Firestone course, but he had problems with his driving and had to play several second shots from the rough which upset his usual accuracy to the greens.
