  • Description

As the United States Embassy siege continues in Teheran, President Carter has authorised his special emissary Ramsey Clark to investigate the possibility of mediation between the embassy's Iranian captors and a Palestine Liberation Organisation mission. The question was also raised at a meeting in Beirut between PLO representatives and Lebanese Prime Minister Selim Al-Hoss.

SYNOPSIS: PLO representatives Mr. Mohsen Abu Maizar and Mr. Abu Jihad were in Lebanon to discuss the forthcoming Arab summit in Tunis. They took the opportunity to hold informal talks on the U.S. embassy siege and the possibility of PLO mediation.

Although their talks with the Lebanese Prime Minister did not result in an announcement, they did say afterwards that there was at the time no official PLO delegation in Iran which could intercede.

Mr. Abu Jihad told Prime Minister Al-Hoss that the PLO representative in Teheran was merely discussing the embassy siege as part of the PLO's normal relations with a foreign country. There had not been any move to mediate. Meanwhile, the United States has been investigating other potential source of help. Pakistan is reported to have offered to mediate, and a Turkish radio reported the Turkish ambassador in Iran has tried to obtain the hostages' release.
