  • Description

HUNDREDS OF YALE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ATTENDED A MASS MEETING YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29) TO DISCUSS ISSUES RELATED TO THE STUDENTS' STRIKE - NOW IN ITS SECOND WEEK - IN SUPPORT OF 12 BLACK PANTHERS AWAITING TRIAL ON CHARGES OF MURDER AND KIDNAPPING.

THOUSANDS OF OUTSIDERS ARE EXPECTED TO COME TO NEW HAVEN TO ATTEND A RALLY ON MAY 1. YALE'S PRESIDENT, MR. KINGMAN BREWSTER, HAS PROMISED TOTAL UNIVERSITY CO-OPERATION IN HOUSING AND FEEDING THE CROWDS EXPECTED, AND HE HAS SAID THAT THE GATHERING CAN BE PEACEFUL AND NON-VIOLENT IF "ALL CONCERNED CONTINUE THE EXISTING EFFORTS TO BE CONSIDERATE OF THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS".

THE YALE STRIKE STEERING COMMITTEE MADE A STATEMENT DEPLORING A FIRE WHICH BROKE OUT AT THE YALE LAW SCHOOL LIBRARY UNDER WHAT WERE CALLED "SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES" BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. THE STATEMENT ALSO POINTED OUT THAT NO YALE BUILDINGS WERE SEIZED, NO PROFESSORS INTIMIDATED, AND NO STUDENTS COERCED.

A NEW ISSUE OF THE LOCAL BLACK PANTHER MAGAZINE DISTRIBUTED ON MONDAY CONTAINED PRECISE INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING MOLOTOV COCKTAILS. THE MAGAZINE STATED THAT THESE WERE TO BE USED ONLY FOR SELF-DEFENSE.

THE YALE LAW SCHOOL CANCELLED AN ALUMNI MEETING SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND, AND THE MEDICAL SCHOOL FACULTY VOTED TO SUPPORT MR. BREWSTER IN SUPPORTING A COURSE OF ACTION THAT WOULD CONTRIBUTE TO THE ASSURANCE OF A FAIR TRIAL FOR THE BLACK PANTHERS. THE MEDICAL SCHOOL FACULTY ALSO MADE A STATEMENT ASKING EVERY CITIZEN AND STUDENT TO CONSIDER WHETHER PARTICIPATION IN THE MAY I RALLY WILL RESULT IN JUSTICE FOR THE PANTHERS OR IN VIOLENCE. THEY SAID THAT MEDICAL FACILITIES WOULD BE AVAILABLE TO ALL WHO REQUIRE EMERGENCY AID DURING THE WEEKEND.

IN A SPEECH ON WEDNESDAY, VICE-PRESIDENT SPIRO AGNEW CALLED FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF MR. BREWSTER WITH A "MORE MATURE AND RESPONSIBLE PERSON". HE CALLED THE BLACK PANTHERS "MEMBERS OF AN ORGANISATION DEVOTED TO CRIMINAL VIOLENCE, ANARCHY, AND THE DESTRUCTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." MR. AGNEW SAID THAT PRESIDENT BREWSTER'S STATEMENT THAT HE DOES NOT FEEL THE BLACK PANTHERS CAN GET A FAIR TRIAL WITHIN THE UNITED STATES JUDICIAL SYSTEM DID NOT GIVE THE STUDENTS OF YALE UNIVERSITY A "FAIR IMPRESSION OF THEIR COUNTRY".

MR. DOUGLAS MIRANDA, LEADER OF THE NEW HAVEN BLACK PANTHERS, SPOKE TO THE CROWDS ASSEMBLED YESTERDAY:
