  • Description

In Moscow, the wife of the dissident, Dr. Yuri Orlov, has described her husband's trial as a circus. Dr. Orlov faces charges of anti-Soviet agitation. Meanwhile in Paris a group of French physicists and writers have been protesting against the trial which started on Monday(15 May).

SYNOPSIS: Police were at the Russian Embassy in Paris to meet the group of about thirty scientists and writers who had made their way through the city on Tuesday (16 May) to try and hand a ??? petition complaining of the charges against Dr. Orlov to embassy officers. The protestors carried placards criticising the conditions of the human rights leader's trial.

While the protest continued, Mrs. Orlov told western correspondents barred from the trial in Moscow that her husband had lost his right to defend himself fully.

The French playwright and novelist, Eugene Ionesco, took part in the paris demonstration organised by the Nobel Physics prize winner, Professor Alfred Kastler.

Another French writer, Andre Glucksman, was also at the demonstration. Reuters reported from Moscow that Dr. Orlov had repeatedly been stopped from questioning prosecution witnesses. Dr. Orlov, who is 53, faces up to seven years in jail if convicted of the charges against him.

The Paris demonstration was supported in part by the French Communist Party paper, "L'Humanite", which said the conditions of the trial were worrying. Some pushing developed at the protest but no arrests were made.
