  • Description

Colombian boxer Rodrigo Valdes demolished the American Benny Briscoe in Monte Carlo on Saturday night (25 May) to take the World Boxing Council's middleweight crow. briscoe - known as the Philadelphia Robot - had no answer for the Valdes attack and was knocked out in the seventh round.

Twenty-seven-year-old Valdes controlled the fight almost from the beginning and seldom left an opening for the American, who was reduced to swinging wild punches. From the third round, Valdos began walking around the ring, picking Briscoe off with a long left and occasionally jumping in for a ferocious close-range attack.

However, on the rare occasion Briscoe got through, he was dangerous and Valdes was forced to take his share of punishment. Briscoe opened a cut above the Colombian's left eye in the fourth round, and continued to work on it. At the same time, Valdes made a bloody mess of Briscoe's nose.

By the fifth, the end for Briscoe seemed in sight. Valdes leapt in and hammered him with a fantastic series of punches, with drew little in the way of a counter-attack. However, in the sixth Briscoe made a brief come-back, landing more blows than in any other round.

In the seventh, Valdes went in for the kill. One minute and forty-five seconds into the round, he finished Briscoe off with a left and followed with an equally forceful right. Briscoe hit the canvas, staggered up at the count of eight, but was counted out on his feet.

On sunday (26 May), actor-promoter Alain Delon announced that Valdes would go on to defend his title against Argentinian Carlos Monzon, who is recognised by the World Boxing Association as their middleweight champion. However, some sports wr ??? say there's only a slim chance that the bout will eventuate, as Monzon has retired and is unlikely to chance a come-back.
