  • Description

A solid-fuel, rocket-boosted glider was successfully launched on Wednesday (14 June) at a military testing range in the Negev Desert. Named "Technion '72", the glider was designed and built as a scientific project by senior aeronautical engineering students of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.

The launching was the first in an ambitious three-year programme to develop and send aloft sophisticated internally controlled gliders by means of rocket boosters. Rocket-boosted scale models are often tested during the development of advanced jet aircraft.

Technion's student rocket programme began in 1965 and each year has seen increasingly sophisticated systems launched. With over 400 students, the Department of Aeronautical Engineering is a key facility in training the technological manpower upon which Israel depends for its defence capability.
