Background: Portugal's left-wing Prime Minister, Vasco Goncalves returned from the NATO summit conference in Brussels on Sunday (1 June) to affirm his support for Portugal's continued inclusion in the North Atlantic alliance.

When he arrived at Lisbon airport, he was greeted by a crowd of six thousand cheering communist supporters, and President Francisco Costa Gomes. The demonstrators were under instructions to wave national rather than party flags, following an easing in the socialist-communist power struggle which has threatened stability in Portugal.

As a gesture of public reconciliation with the socialists, General Goncalves embraced the socialist Justice Minster Francisco Salgado Zenha.

However, the crowds chanted the communist slogan " The is only one kind of socialism, the people's and none other", to which the President replied: " We also think there is only one kind of Socialism".

The demonstration had the backing of the Communist Party and all its traditional allies.
