Background: Although in London hopes continue to rise that the dispute with Malta over its military bases will be settled soon, in Malta the R.A.F. has gone ahead with evacuation plans.
At Luqa airport on Monday (March 20), Air Officer Commanding Malta, Air Commodore Colahan, inspected a R.A.F. Regiment parade, locally employed civilians and Admiralty police. The R.A.K. Ensign was then ceremonially lowered, and the Air Commodore took the salute.
SYNOPSIS: Luqa Airport, Malta--where the Royal Air Force has been preparing for evacuation because of the dispute between London and Valetta ever military bases.
The Air Officer Commanding the island, Air Commodore Colahan, was greeted on the tarmac parade ground by Group Captain Easterbrook, and invited to inspect the parade by members of the R.A.F. Regiment.
Besides R.A.F. personnel, the Air Commodore spoke with locally employed civilians and Admiralty police staff.
In common with the other services, the Royal Air Force has gone ahead with preparations to leave Malta even though hopes persist in London that an agreement will soon be reached, settling the log row over rent for Malta's military bases. The deadline for settlement is March 31st.
