  • Description

The Rumanian leader, President Nicolae Ceausescu, arrived in Ljubljana in Yugoslavia on Wednesday (8 September) for a three day visit.

SYNOPSIS: President Ceausescu was originally scheduled to visit President Josip Tito last October, but the talks were then abruptly cancelled. The reason for the cancellation was never officially given, but diplomats quoted by Reuters news agency said there were two main reasons. Probably the most serious was that Yugoslav agents in the Rumanian capital, Bucharest, seized an anti-Tito emigre leader, Vladimir Dapcevic.

President Ceausescu and his wife were welcomed at Ljubljana airport by President and Mrs. Tito. The two independent Communist leaders were due to hold talks at President Tito's residence near Kranj. The Rumanian leader will also visit Belgrade before leaving Yugoslavia. Both leaders, who have met many times in the last decade, share many policies that challenge the Soviet Union's brand of communism.
