  • Description

A confident Senator George McGovern appeared before a crowd of Cheering supporters in portland, Oregon on tuesday night (23 May) after the announcement that he'd won landslide victories in both the Oregon and Rhode Island Democratic Primaries.

In his victory speech, he talked cheerfully of the future:
(The California primary to which Senator McGovern referred is the most important of the primaries still to be contested. A win for the Senator there would make him the clear favourite to win the Democratic presidential nomination at Miami Beach in mid-July)
In the Oregon primary, Senator McGovern took more than fifty per cent of the vote. Oregon is the state which in 1960 gave a strong vote of support to John F. kennedy -- and in 1968 gave a primary victory to Eugene McCarthy.

In Rhode Island - where pre-election polls predicted only a narrow win for McGovern - he won 41 per cent of the vote compared with Senator Edmund Muskie's 21 per cent and Senator Hubert Humphrey's 20 per cent.
