  • Description

The annual May Day celebrations were commemorated in Dakar on Friday (Ist May) by the traditional Workers' Procession through the city streets.

Each year the morning parade makes its way from the Champs de Courses to the Bourse de Travail (Workers' Exchange), through the city's major streets.

Each section of the march is identified by the banner sand placards of the various workers' unions. It's regarded as an opportunity for workers to make known their claims for better working conditions, higher salaries, and greater opportunity for the young.

The Senegal parade is just one hundreds of similar demonstrations which take place around the world on May Day when millions of workers celebrate the traditional holiday by rallying, marching, striking, or holding military displays.
