Background: Dutch national costumes have always been favourite subjects for tourist photographer, colourful as they are, and what therefore could be more natural, or more pleasing, than to see them used as the inspiration for a new set of stamps to be issued in Holland during this summer. Taking as their subjects the pretty girls of Friesland, Marken, Volendam, the island of Walcheren, and the fishergirls of Scheveningen, the artists have produced a design for these new stamps that is most pleasing in its simplicity.

The extra charge on these stamps will be used for national health care, social and cultural work.

The five ladies who posed for the photographs for the stamps received, from the hands of the Director General of the Post Office, Mr. J.D.M. van der Toorn, the first of the new stamps to be printed.
