    The Japanese coal miners union has charged that inadequate safety precautions were responsible for the explosion in a coal mine at Omuta on Saturday (9 November) that cost the lives of 451 miners.Another 487 miners were injured, 58 of them seriously.

    The union called for nationwide protest meetings and urged miners to refuse to work at what it called "dangerous coal mines."
    The cause of the explosion has not been determined definitely.One widely accepted theory is that an electrical short circuit caused a spark that ignited coal dust.Japanese Prime Minister Ikeda has ordered an inquiry.

    The explosion was the second worst mine disaster in Japan's history, A blast at the Hoje colliery...also on Kyushu island..on 15 December 1914 killed 687 persons.
