    MORE THAN 50-THOUSAND PEOPLE ON TUESDAY TOOK PART IN A PARADE IN TANANARIVE TO MARK THE OPENING OF THE TWELFTH NATIONAL CONGRESS OF THE MALAGASY REPUBLIC'S RULING SOCIALIST PARTY.

    MANY OF THE MARCHERS CARRIED BANNERS, CALLING FOR THE WITHDRAWAL OF SOVIET AND OTHER WARSAW PACT FORCES FROM CZECHOSLOVAKIA, AND CONDEMNING THE INTERVENTION OF THE FORCES IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA. THE MALAGASY GOVERNMENT HAS CRITICISED THE SOVIET ACTION.

    THREE THOUSAND DELEGATES WERE ATTENDING THE PARTY CONGRESS REPRESENTING MORE THAN 100 ELECTORATES WITHIN THE MALAGASY REPUBLIC.

    THIS YEAR CELEBRATIONS HAVE HAD A SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE. APART FROM BEING THE TWELFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SOCIALIST PARTY - FOUNDED IN 1957 BY PRESIDENT TSIRINANA - IT IS ALSO THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE REPUBLIC OF MADAGASCAR- DECLARED IN OCTOBER, 1958.

    THE CONGRESS OF THE MADAGASCAR SOCIALIST PARTY WAS ALSO BEING ATTENDED BY OVERSEAS DELEGATES, REPRESENTING WEST GERMANY, ISRAEL, MAURITIUS AND FRANCE.

    THE CONGRESS HAD AS ITS THEME UNITY, DISCIPLINE AND WORK. ThE DELEGATES WERE TO CONSIDER THE PROGRESS MADE BY THE MALAGASY REPUBLIC DURING THE PAST DECADE. ThERE WAS ALSO TO BE DISCUSSIONS ON A NUMBER OF INTERNATIONAL MATTERS, INCLUDING CZECHOSLOVAKIA, VIETNAM AND THE SITUATION IN NIGERIA.
