Background: A warm welcome awaited Swedish Prime Minister Tage Erlander when he arrived with his wife and a senior Foreign Affairs official at Delhi's Palam airport, Dec 18.
Erlander was received at the airport by Premier Nehru, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, Defence Minister Krishna Menon and other members of the Indian Cabinet.
Speaking to the Press, Erlander said: "Swedish people take a deep interest in things in India. We admire the splendours of your past and we follow with fascination your great work in the present to build for the future. We start this visit of goodwill and friendship with the serious purpose of gaining a deeper knowledge of your country and its problems. We have every reason to believe that such knowledge can only lead to greater understanding and to a tightening of the good and friendly relations between the two countries."
Mr. and Mrs. Erlander, Dec 19, visited the Raj ghat, laid a wreath at the tomb of Mahatma Gandhi, Father of the Indian Nation, and later called on President Prasad.
The Swedish Prime Minister left Delhi, Dec 21, for a general tour of India. He will return to Sweden from Bombay, Dec 30.
