  • Description

After a two weeks' march from Salonika, 103 Greek engineering students, protesting against educational discrimination, reached Athens, Jan 7, when they clashed with police forces on the outskirts of the city.

The 420-mile marathon was recognized to draw Prime Minster Karamaulis' attention to refusal by his Education Minister to give Macedonia's Secondary School of Mechanics a status equal to that of the Athens Polytechnic.

Instead, the Ministry of the Interior, fearing a disturbance of public order, sent out a detachment of gendarmes to disperse the marchers before they could enter the capital, As police charged the demonstrators, many of them jumped into Scaramanga Bay in an attempt to circumvent the detachment and continue the protest march through the city. But the gendarmes threw a cordon along the shore and surrounded the students as they came out of the water.
