  • Description

On the tenth anniversary of the Constitution of the Italian republic, members of the Partisan Movement were allowed to stage a parade in Rome, organised by leftist parties. The parade formed under the Coliseum and proceeded down the Via dei for Imperiali and ended in the Piazza Venezia where homage was paid at the tomb of the unknown soldier. The parade included 350 members of the movement who had received gold medals for their partisan activities during the war, and the relatives and friends of this who had received the award postumously. The flag of the Partisan Movement - decorated with a gold medal - will henceforth be kept in a hall beneath the monument of the Unknown Warrior's tomb. There were disturbances in the Venezia square when members of the M.S.I. (fascists Party) staged a demonstration calling the partisans 'traitors and assassins'. The two sides then came to blows and police had great difficulty in restoring order as several people were thrown to the ground and trampled beneath the surging crowd.
