    900 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH, WILLIAM, DUKE OF NORMANDY - WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR - SET SAIL FOR ENGLAND. HE SAILED FROM ST. VALERY SUR SOMME AND A MONUMENT COMMEMORATING HIS EMBARKATION WAS UNVEILED THERE TODAY (SUNDAY).

    THE NORMAN ARMY, WHICH INCLUDED VOLUNTEERS FROM SPAIN AND ITALY, CROSSED THE ENGLISH CHANNEL ON THE NIGHT OF 27 SEPTEMBER, 1066, AND LANDED UNOPPOSED AT PEVENSEY, A FEW MILES TO THE WEST OF HASTINGS, THE FOLLOWING MORNING. KING HAROLD OF ENGLAND WAS THEN AT YORK, IN THE NORTH OF ENGLAND, BUT IMMEDIATELY SET OFF BY FORCED MARCHES FOR THE SOUTH. THE BATTLE OF HASTINGS TOOK PLACE ON 14 OCTOBER. IT WAS ALL OVER BY DUSK. KING HAROLD WAS DEAD - KILLED BY A CHANCE ARROW - AND WILLIAM, DUKE OF NORMANDY, WAS TO BECOME KING WILLIAM 1 OF ENGLAND.

    IN TODAY'S COMMEMORATIVE CEREMONY, TOWNSPEOPLE DRESSED AS NORMAN KNIGHTS AND SOLDIERS AND LED BY "WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR" PARADED THROUGH ST. VALERY SUR SOMME AFTER ATTENDING A SOLEMN MASS. A MONUMENT WAS THEN UNVEILED BY M. DE BROGLIE, SECRETARY OF STATE AT THE FRENCH FOREIGN MINISTRY. A PLAQUE ON THE MONUMENT READS: "FROM THIS PORT, WILLIAM OF NORMANDY LEFT FOR THE CONQUEST OF ENGLAND".
