Background: LEE EVANS (UNITED STATES), WEST GERMANY'S HEIDI ROSENDAHL AND -KENYA'S OWN KIPCHOGE KEINO BROUGHT AN OLYMPIC TOUCH TO THE INTERNATIONAL INVITATION MEETING HELD IN NAIROBI YESTERDAY (SATURDAY)
KEINO KENYA'S 1968 OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALLIST IN THE 1,500 METRES, HAD AN EASY WIN IN THE YESTERDAY'S EVENT AT THIS DISTANCE, COMING HOME UNCHALLENGED AT THREE MINUTES 44.2 SEC.

NEXT THE WOMEN'S 100 METRES, WITH HEIDI ROSENDAHL OF WEST GERMANY THE WINNER IN A KENYA OPEN RECORD TIME OF 12.1 SECONDS. SHE WENT ON TO WIN FOUR OTHER EVENTS, SETTING NEW KENYA OPEN RECORDS IN TWO OF THEM.

THE MEN'S 400 METRES HURDLES FEATURED ONE OVERSEAS COMPETITOR, R. SCHUBERT OF WEST GERMANY. HE FINISHED SECOND BEHIND KENYA'S M. MUREI, WHO IS AWAITING CONFIRMATION OF TWO LOCAL RECORDS HE SET EARLIER THIS SEASON.

IN THE MEN'S 400 METRES ALL EYES WERE ON LEE EVANS, WHO BROKE THE WORLD RECORD IN THIS EVENT AT THE MEXICO OLYMPICS, AND ON CHARLES ASATI, THE KENYAN WHO RECENTLY SCORED A SURPRISE WIN OVER EVANS.

EVANS HAD HIS REVENGE, WINNING IN 45.2 SECONDS, WITH ASATI EQUALLING HIS OWN KENYAN NATIONAL RECORD IN SECOND PLACE AND WEST GERMANY'S JELLINGHAUS THIRD. EVANS, WHO ALSO WON THE 200 METRES, GAVE THE BLACK POWER SALUTE AS HE DID AT THE MEXICO OLYMPICS.

FINALLY, ANOTHER LOOK AT THE FLYING KENYAN, KIPCHOGE KEINO, AS HE SETTLED DOWN IN FOURTH POSITION IN THE 5,000 METRES. HE WAS STRONGLY CHALLENGED BY THE ETHIOPIAN PAIR, MASERESHA AND DEGERA, WHO LED FOR MUCH OF THE RACE, BUT CAME THROUGH WITH TREMENDOUS BURST OF SPEED IN THE FINAL LAP TO WIN IN 14 MINUTES 32.4 SEC. MASERESHA WAS SECOND AND DEGERA THIRD.
