  • Description

President Ernesto Geisel of Brazil is on a five-day official state visit to Japan.

SYNOPSIS: President Geisel arrived in Tokyo on Wednesday (15 September). The day (16 September) after he was given an official welcome at the Akasaka Palace by Emperor Hirohito, Prime Minister Miki and members of his new cabinet. Senor Geisel is the first Brazilian president ever to visit Japan.

Like all visiting heads of state he was invited to inspect the guard of honour. The visit is expected to strengthen Brazil's economic relations with Japan which lost momentum during the world recession that followed the oil crisis of the early seventies.

Brazilian officials have attached more importance to this trip than to Senor Geisel's visits to france and Britain earlier this year. This is because Japan is the third largest investor in Brazil after the Untied States and West Germany.

After the ceremony Mr. Miki held informal talks with Senor Geisel inside the palace. During the president's stay, Japan is expected to pledge co-operation in several major industrial projects in Brazil.

Initial investments, expected to be shared by Japanese, Italian and Brazilian interests, are estimated at almost 1.5 billion US dollars. Among ventures scheduled for discussion is a proposed steel mill near Brazil's iron-ore loading port of Tubagao. Other issues to be looked at include Japanese investment in iron ore, aluminium, hydro-electric power production. and a major agricultural development project.
