Background: The Columbia space shuttle returned to its home base at Kennedy Space Centre in florida, on November 22, strapped to the spine of a 747 Jumbo Jet. the shuttle is to be overhauled for another mission next October. About 200 Space Centre workers and their families staged an impromptu welcome home party as the jet touched down. They were jubilant at the success of the Space Shuttle's recent marred only by a fault in two of the crew's space suits, which prevented them from undertaking the first spacewalks from the craft. The shuttle left Edwards Air Force Base in Texas for refuelling, and it resumed its journey early on November 22. Columbia Vehicle Manager, mr. Bill Williams, said the shuttle would be removed from the 747 to be towed to a hanger for a nine-month overhaul. The Columbia is not scheduled to fly again until the ninth mission next October, when it will carry the Spacelab Research Centre. The Challenger, the United States' second space shuttle, is due to make its maiden voyage in late January or early February next year.
