Dr. Mario Soares, Secretary-General of the Portuguese Socialist Party, spoke to mass rally of 30,000?
Dr. Mario Soares, Secretary-General of the Portuguese Socialist Party, spoke to mass rally of 30,000 supporters at Lisbon's Campo Pequeno Bullring on Friday (21 March). He outlined the Party's conditions for participation in the new Portuguese Government, formed after last week's abortive right-wing coup.
Dr. Soares said: "The Socialist Party naturally wants to participate in this Government, because it believes that one cannot construct socialism, socialism in liberty, socialism maintaining the political democracy which we all consider essential, without the participation of the Socialist Party".
But he said this was on condition that there was first an agreement between the future coalition parties and the Armed Forces movement on political principles....."Without this, there will be no coalition, there will be just a juxtaposition of parties", he added.
Justice Minister Salgado Zenha also addressed the rally and the assembled supporters chanted their enthusiasm with slogans like "Unity, unity" and "Soares, our friend, the socialists are with you."
