  • Description

American paratroopers on New Year's Day moved into Hau Ngia to back up South Vietnamese troops who had gone into the province a few days before and had run into sizeable opposition.

Hau Ngia, the province just west of Saigon, has had a great deal of Viet Cong activity lately. When the South Vietnamese regulars went in they engaged the Viet Cong in two heavy firefights and reported back they had killed 126 and captured more than 60 of the guerrillas.

The Americans then came in to help. Running into some enemy small arms fire, the GI's of the 173rd Airborne Brigade called in artillery support.

The fight was not a long one and American casualties were few. Helicopters came in to take them out and civilians were evacuated from the area, too.

Although this fight was brief, officials said they thought the campaign in Hau Ngia would be a long one.
