  • Description

The thirty-five member Political Bureau of the Ivory Coast's Democratic Party -- the country's only political party -- has ended a five-day review of domestic and international developments.

The meeting was held in private under the chairmanship of the Party's Secretary-General Philippe Yace, at Yamoussokro, the birth-place of the Ivory Coast's President Felix Houphouet-Boigny. M. Yace is also the President of the National Assembly.

The Political Bureau issued a Final Communique on Saturday (16 June).

It said steps had been taken to give the Democratic Party new life, with its structure involving all those from the leadership down to the members.

The Political Bureau said all mass media in the Ivory Coast would be put to the service of the people's education and training. In the 1970's, the emphasis would be on training in education, science, technology and economics. There would also be a stronger effort to train specialised information personnel.

The communique notes that the "Ivorisation" of the country's private sector would continue to be put into effect.

The Democratic Party Political Bureau recommended that the Ivory Coast Government contact credit organisation to help the country through the current drought. The Bureau suggested that the repayment of farmer's loans be extended for one year and that the Government pay the loan interest for that period.
