Background: INTRODUCTION: With the law and order situation in Bangladesh's capital, Dacca, showing a little deterioration, the strength of Police force in the country's only Metropolitan city has been doubled.
Country's strongman, Major-General Ziaur Rahman, who took the salute in a passing out parade today (1.2.77), has told in his speech that the forces are being increased to give those who disturb our peace "a bloody nose".
Observers in Dacca tend to believe that the raising of the Police Force in Dacca, who are called the Metropolitan Police, has been prompted by a series of bomb blasts, bank robberies and a number of killings in the city during the last two months.
With the new forces raised, the strength of Metropolitan Police in Dacca is now nearly ??? 50,000. Only two months ago, it was only 15000.
The raising of the Police Force in Dacca, with a much higher salary and benefits than their colleagues working in the district, has raised a national debate on its justifiability. Many would think that the Metropolitan Police has been a burden for a country still smarting under economic depression. But others would support the emergence of a highly professional and disciplined Police force in army as it can guarantee the law and order situation in the capital. It is said that life and property lost to miscreant in the absence of the Police force are much higher than the nation would spend for its maintenance.
But it is generally agreed that the law and order situation that appreciably in the Dacca city since a different cadre of Police force, known as the Metropolitan Police, was first raised last year. The number of crime has gone down, the hijacking of car and property has stopped, the bank robbery has been appreciably checked. But the authorities realised that this situation could not be sustained unless the forces were raised.
The matter assumed urgency when three of the Policeman were gunned down in the city last month by a group of armed young men who said to be still at large.
