  • Description

Torrential rain int eh Australian inlands has left thousands of wild animals high and dry.

In northern western Victoria, Lake Ambacutta flooded hundreds of square miles (kilometres) of low-lying ground stranding animals on patches of high ground or in trees.

Forty kangaroos found themselves stranded on a small island with little food and no chance of getting off for days.

Local farmers and members of the Fisheries and Game Preservation Society organised a rescue party and ferried the animals from the island. They tied the kangaroos up before carrying them abroad rafts and boats.

The rescue party also came across dozens of other animals clinging to trees and other debris in the floodwaters.
