  • Description

Tanzania's First Vice-President, Mr. Aboud Jumbe, arrived in Lusaka on Monday (April 9) for a four-day official visit. At the airport he was greeted by the Zambian Vice-President, Mr. Mainza Chona, members of the diplomatic corps, traditional dancers and a crowd of about 2,500 people.

Mr. Jumbe went straight form the airport to the University Teaching Hospital, where he attended to inauguration of the hospital's professional unit and X-ray department.

The Vice-President's schedule included visits to the Zambian copper belt, the southern town of Livingstone and the Victoria Falls before meeting President Kenneth Kaunda at State House.

It is the first visit to Zambia by Mr. Jumbe since he came to power last year as leader of Zanzibar's Revolutionary Council, following the assassination of Sheikh Abeid Karume.

During his visit, the Vice-President will be having formal talks with President Kaunda. One of the current issues involving the two countries, is the Zambia-Rhodesia border closure. Communication through Tanzania to the port of Dar-es-Salaam is of vital importance to land-locked Zambia.

Recently there have been fears that heavy traffic carrying Zambia's copper exports and imports on the Tan-Zam road has drastically reduced its life-expectancy". But work on the railway from Zambian's Copperbelt to Dar-es-Salaam is reported to be progressing well. The revised completion date of March 1974 is one year ahead of schedule. It is expected that the new railroad could handle the bulk of Zambia's 700,000 tons of exports a year and the 1.4 million tons of imports.
