• Short Summary

The confrontation between Indonesia and Malaysia has been formally ended. The treaty, signed in Djakarta?

  • Description

The confrontation between Indonesia and Malaysia has been formally ended. The treaty, signed in Djakarta today, comes after three years of hostility between the two governments. Since June, when an informal truce was reached after talks in Bangkok, diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the rest of the world have improved. In July Mr. Stewart, then Foreign Secretary, visited Djakarta, and just before today's treaty, the Australian external affairs Minister, Mr. Hasluck, arrived for talks with General Suharto. At the end of their discussion, Mr. Hasluck visited the new Australian Embassy being built in the centre of Djakarta.

Talks with the Government lasted three days, and today Mr. Hasluck announced the results of his visit -- emergency aid in raw materials and spare parts to help the recovery of Indonesia's heavy industry.
