A three month ban on the sale of meat within Uruguay was ended on Friday (November 16). The next day 400,000 kilos were sold in Montevideo alone, which has abut a million inhabitants. The ban was imposed to ensure that enough meat was available for export.
Uruguay is heavily dependent on its meat exports. The herds are bigger than ever - there are three times as many cattle in the country as people - but in August the level of exports was going down. The government is determined to take advantage of the soaring price of meat in the world markets.
There is now a relatively plentiful supply of meat for the home market; 300 tons were brought in to Montevideo for the lifting of the ban. But the government has retained a system of rationing and each regional centre has a quota. The Ministry of Supply has said that the people cannot be allowed to eat their foreign currency.
