  • Description

Cheering Peronists packed the streets of Posadas, Argentina, on Monday (14 April) as they celebrated a victory for President Maria Estela Peron's ruling party in the first elections in the country for two years.

The voting--for a governor, vice-governor and 32 deputies was the first test of government popularity at the polls since Senora Peron came to power, following the death of her husband General Duan Peron last year.

It was a solid if unspectacular victory, with the Peronist Frejuli coalition receiving 74,330 votes against the 62,663 polled by the Centrist Radical Party. Still, the margin of victory for the Peronists was greater than some experts had predicted.

Victory brought the Peronists the governership and half the 32 assembly seats.
