  • Description

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh with Princess Margaret and Princess Alexandra had a private preview of the Chelsea Flower Show tonight.

It fills a giant margues covering over three-and-three-quarters acres in the grounds of the Royal Hospital in Chelsea. There are a number of gardens under the great expense of canvas, including a Dutch garden and a French one where men were at work today among the flowers, fruit and vegetables.

Although spring has presented growers with an exceptionally trying season, there is no evidence of it at this show organised by the Royal Horticultural Society. In every respect it is magnificently successful, and notable for its range of plants and flowers rather than any particular type of plant or exhibit.

The royal visitors were attracted to the rock gardens where the azaleas were the object of admiration. They then went on to the French and Dutch gardens, and also toured the marques.

The late spring has resulted in a magnificent display of tulips, and orchids are in abundance.

One brand of tulip worthy of singling out for special mention is West Point, with yellow flowers. These and thousands of other blooms can be seen by the general public when the show opens to them on Wednesday.
