THROUGH THE STREETS OF LISBON-A MARCH OF SILENCE AS MORE THAN 10,000 PORTUGUESE AND GOANS DEMONSTRATED ON TUESDAY TO MARK THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE INVASION OF GOA BY THE INDIAN ARMY.

THE DEMONSTRATION WAS ORGANIZED BY GOAN REFUGEES IN LISBON AND IT ENDED IN THE AFONSO DE ALBUQUERQUE SQUARE, NAMED AFTER THE MAN WHO CONQUERED GOA FOR PORTUGAL IN 1510. ALBUQUERQUE BECAME THE FIRST VICEROY OF PORTUGUESE INDIA. A WREATH WAS LAID ON THE ALBUQUERQUE MEMORIAL.

FOLLOWING THE MASS MEETING, THE DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED TO THE JERONIMOS MONASTERY WHERE A SERVICE WAS HELD IN MEMORY OF THE GOANS KILLED IN THE TWO-DAY WAR INDIA WAGED TO TAKE OVER THE PORTUGUESES RULED TERRITORY ON HER WEST COAST. ACCORDING TO THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT 22 INDIANS AND 17 PORTUGUESE TROOPS WERE KILLED IN THE ACTION.

DURING THE SUMMER PORTUGAL WITHDREW RESIDENCE PERMITS FOR INDIANS LIVING IN PORTUGUESE TERRITORY. THIS APPLIED MAINLY TO PORTUGUESE EAST AFRICA WHERE THE INDIAN COMMUNITY, MOSTLY SHOPKEEPERS, WAS ESTIMATED AT 5,000. THEY WERE ALSO ORDERED TO LIQUIDATE ALL THEIR BUSINESS INTERESTS. THE PROCEEDS WOULD BE FROZEN, EXCEPT AMOUNTS TRANSFERRED BY PERMISSION OF LOCAL CURRENCY BOARDS. OBSERVERS BELIEVED THAT FROZEN INDIAN ASSETS IN EAST AFRICA WOULD PROVIDE A BARGAINING PLATFORM TO RECOVER SIMILARLY FROZEN GOAN PROPERTY.
