  • Description

As part of the celebrations to mark the tenth anniversary of Lusaka's Evelyn Hone College of Further Education, President Kenneth Kaunda opened a new, three-storey teaching block on Friday (16 November).

The new facility, which cost 646,000 sterling (1,648,750 dollars) to build, will be shared by the Department of Business Studies and the Paramedical Department. The Paramedical Department trains students in dispensing, medical laboratory technology, physiotherapy, public health inspection and radiography.

In a speech at the opening ceremony, President Kaunda told students to have "the courage to fight poverty, ignorance, disease, crime, inequality and the exploitation of man". He continued, "you must be ready and equipped to fight the enemies in your own theatres of action through the proper use of the knowledge, skills and experience that you have gained here."
President Kaunda also warned the students against the dangers of drink and drugs - a "dangerous obsession".

The Evelyn Hone College is named after the last colonial Governor of Northern Rhodesia (the colonial name for Zambia). It opened in 1963 with an enrolment of only 53 students, but since, has expanded greatly. Now the College has over 2,000 full and part-time students taking 31 different courses.
