The Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, unveiled a plaque to her father's memory at the Jawahar Lal Nehru stadium, which is named after him. Among other dignitaries at t eh rehearsal was the Indian Vice-President Mohammad Hidayatullah, whose motorcade was accompanied around the stadium circuit by uniformed horse-guards. Indian schoolchildren in colourful dress paraded in a march-past carrying the flags of the 30 countries taking part in the Asian Games. A highlight of the dress rehearsal was the procession of 32 elephants from the Guruvayoor temple at Kerala in southern India.
