    THE AMERICAN FREIGHTER "AFRICAN PILOT" WAS LOADED WITH BABY FOOD AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES LAST THURSDAY - RANSOM FOR 1,113 PRISONERS CAPTURED IN THE ABORTIVE 1961 INVASION OF CUBA.

    AS WORKMEN PAINTED THE SHIP IN READINESS TO SAIL ON SUNDAY, SUPPLIES FROM ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES WERE BEING LOADED ON BOARD. THE AFRICAN PILOT WAS SUPPLIED BY A COMMITTEE OF AMERICAN SHIPPING COMPANIES TO THE RED CROSS.

    MUCH OF THE DRUGS AND FOOD HAVE BEEN GIVEN BY THE MANUFACTURERS. MONEY TO PURCHASE OTHER SUPPLIES HAS BEEN RAISED BY THE TRADE UNIONS AND PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS AS WELL AS BY THE FAMILIES OF THE PRISONERS.

    THE FIRST OF THE PRISONERS WILL START RETURNING TO THE UNITED STATES AT 6 A.M. TOMORROW (SUNDAY). IT WAS HOPED THAT ALL OF THEM WOULD BE RELEASED BY CHRISTMAS.

    FINAL AGREEMENT IN NEGOTIATIONS, WHICH HAVE CONTINUED FOR OVER A YEAR, WAS ANNOUNCED LAST NIGHT BY GENERAL LUCIUS CLAY, CHAIRMAN OF THE CUBAN FAMILIES ADVISORY COMMITTEE, AND MR. ROLAND HARRIMAN, CHAIRMAN OF THE AMERICAN RED CROSS.

    THE AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED LATE LAST NIGHT BY MR. JAMES DONOVAN, THE NEW YORK LAWYER WHO HAD MADE FREQUENT TRIPS TO HAVANA AS A MEDIATOR, AND DR. FIDEL CASTRO, THE CUBAN PREMIER.

    UNDER THE AGREEMENT THE PRISONERS WILL BE FREED AND ALLOWED TO RETURN TO THE U.S. WHEN AT LEAST 20 PER CENT OF THE 53 MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF SUPPLIES IS IN CUBAN HANDS. THE PRISONERS WILL BE FLOWN TO MIAMI IN A SHUTTLE SERVICE OPERATED BY FOUR-ENGINED AIRLINERS.
