    OTHER MALAYSIAN TROOPS BASED ON THE ISLAND TAKE ON THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF PATROLLING THE HEMP, PEPPER AND COCONUT PLANTATIONS. THEY ALSO PATROL SEVERAL VILLAGES AND KEEP A LIAISON WITH THE INDONESIAN RESIDENTS.

    A SCHOOL WAS SET UP BY THE MALAYSIAN ARMY FOR THE CHILDREN OF INDONESIAN PLANTATION WORKERS. THE SCHOOL IS CLOSE TO THE BORDER AND CLASSES ARE CONDUCTED BY SOLDIERS.
