    The World Health Organisation's annual assembly in Geneva on Tuesday (15 May) hailed progress in wiping ut smallpox throughout the world. A high priority was given to continuing the campaign to eradicate the disease totally. The 137-nation assembly heard that the number of countries recording smallpox has diminished steadily since 1967 -- from 42 countries in that year to nine in 1973. Bangladesh and the northern states of India are still the worst affected.

    During yesterday's session in Geneva, delegates saw a member of the Sudanese delegation receive the Shousha Foundation medal and prize. It is awarded annually to someone who has made a particular contribution to the study of a selected health problem. The man to receive the award yesterday was Dr. Ahmed El Halawani of Sudan.
