  • Description

Mr. Robert McNamara, President of the World Bank, arrived in Copenhagen on Friday (September 18) amid the strictest security operation the city has seen since former Soviet Prime Minister Khrushchev visited the Danish capital in 1964.

A blackout was imposed on the arrival of Mr. McNamara and the American delegates. They are in Copenhagen for meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Extreme left-wing groups have planned mass demonstrations while the conference s in progress.

Arrangements to protect finance ministers and bank governors from all over the world have been strengthened in view of the mass demonstrations.

The main protesting organisations have formed a joint action committee calling itself the World Bank group. They have given an assurance that their demonstrations will be non-violent but other extremist groups of anarchists and Maoists are calling for more violent confrontation. The demonstrators accuse the World Bank of being the tool of capitalism and dedicated to keeping "third world" countries in subjection.

Wire netting has been installed over the windows of the Bella conference centre to ward off stones, fire bombs and other missiles.

All police leave is reported to have bene cancelled from this weekend when 3,000 delegates from more than 100 countries start arriving for the five-day conference opening on Monday. About 1,200 officers will take part in the security operation.
