  • Description

Celebrations to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Union of South Africa were opened by the South African Governor-General Mr. Swart, in Cape Town Mar. 5. He lit a torch from the 'Flame of Civilization', which burns outside the Houses of Parliament, and handed it to the first of the runners who will carry it 500 miles to Bloemfontein.

A large crowd gathered at Jan Van Riebeeck's statue to listen to speeches by the Mayor of Cape Town Mrs Thompson and the Governor General. In his address Mr. Swart said it was up to the present generation to "come be grips with the future in a spirit of determination and faith combined with unbounded optimism and good will between the component parts of the nation".

Members of South African youth movements stood a 24-hour guard round the flame for several days before the opening ceremony. The lighting of the torch was a signal for bonfires to be lit throughout the country.

Both the South African flag and the Union Jack have been hoisted above buildings in the city and a new flag with words 'Union 50' in English and Afrikaans has been made for the jubilee.
