  • Description

Tornadoes pounded homes into kindling in seven middlewestern states early Tuesday (21 April). The twisters, striking Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri missed heavily populated areas and there were no facilities.

At least three persons died however in the driving rains and consequent flooding which spread across the area.

In Peoria, Illinois, the violent winds and thunderstorms damaged 75 homes. Several houses under construction were blown across a street into other houses---and water backed up from sewers after a two inch rainfall. The northwest section of Peoria was without power for several hours...and at last six families had to evacuate their ruined houses.

In Springfield, Illinois, a twister caused heavy damage to a school. Fortunately, there were no pupils in the building at the time.

Elsewhere, the rain fed flooding drove at least 200 persons from their homes in Illinois. The winds knocked out power in St Louis, blew trailer homes off their foundations, toppled trees and caused widespread damage.
