A few days before the May 6 marriage of Princess Margaret and Mr. Antony Armstrong-Jones, and the many wedding preparations included making artificial rose petals in huge cake.
The petals were made by disabled men at the Church Army Rehabilitation Centre, Brixton, South London. Material used was hand-tinted paper, which does not stain dresses exposed to rain.
At Aldershot, one of the dozen wedding cakes was having the finishing touches put to it by its creator, Staff Sergeant Neil Smith, who worked on it for over three weeks. He's an instructor attached to the Army Catering Corps Training Centre, and his recipe for the 5-tier cake included 96 eggs, 1/2 pint of brandy, and 8 lb. butter. The cake weighed 165 lb. and was delivered to Buckingham Palace by Sergeant Smith himself.
