    FANNED BY HIGH WINDS, A FOREST FIRE HIT AN AMERICAN TOWN IN THE WINE-GROWING NAPA VALLEY, NORTH OF SAN FRANCISCO YESTERDAY (MONDAY), DESTROYING BETWEEN 35 AND 50 HOMES BEFORE IT BURNED ITSELF OUT.

    AT SUNRISE, HUNDREDS OF EVACUATED RESIDENTS OF CALISTOGA BEGAN TO RETURN TO THEIR HOMES. SOME OF THE HOUSES WERE IN ASHES. AT THE HEIGHT OF THE FIRE, WINDS OF 40 MILES AN HOUR (64 KPH) WITH GUSTS UP TO 70 (112 KPH) SENT UP CLOUDS OF FIERY ASH THAT TOUCHED OFF BLAZES IN OTHER NEARBY COMMUNITIES.

    THE FIRE SWEPT INTO CALISTOGA LATE ON SUNDAY. MOST OF THE DESTROYED BUILDING CAUGHT FIRE WHEN ASH SET THEIR ROOFS AFIRE. MORE THAN HALF THE TOWN'S 2,500 RESIDENTS AND TOURISTS WERE EVACUATED DURING THE NIGHT. THERE WERE NO CASUALTIES.

    TERRACED VINEYARDS SURROUNDING THE TOWN WERE SAID TO HAVE HELPED IN HALTING THE FIRE. MOST OF THE VINEYARDS HAD BEEN RECENTLY PLOUGHED LEAVING NOTHING TO BURN BETWEEN THE GREEN VINES. BUT THE FACE OF MR. HELENA, WHERE THE FIRE STARTED IN TALL TREES, WAS LEFT STARING NAKEDLY DOWN ON CALISTOGA.
