  • Description

Today's (10 April) racial disorders in Birmingham, Alabama, where Negroes have been staging protest demonstrations for a week over continued segregation and restaurants and lunch counters.

Police arrested 27 Negroes who marched to the City Hall in two groups, but they left blind Negro singer Al Hibbler standing on the sidewalk. Hibbler had been with one of the protest groups.

It was the second day that police had refused to arrest the sightless blind man, This was similar to the approach that authorities took last week when Negro comedian Dick Gregory participated in efforts to register Negroes to vote. The Negroes with Gregory were arrested, but he was left alone.
