Background: The Skylab space station and its carrier rocket was moved into position on its launching pad on Monday (16 April). The launch date is 14 May.
A Saturn 5 rocket will place Skylab in orbit 270 miles above the earth. The following day a second rocket will carry three astronauts who will rendezvous with the orbiting laboratory, and enter it for a 28-day stay. Two more crews will succeed them -- in August and November.
During their sojourn in space, the orbiting scientists will carry out experiments. The knowledge they gain will guide the United States space programme's next developments -- probably the establishing of permanent space stations.

This man is moving a space laboratory to its launching pad. The caterpillar tracks are the first stage for any journey into space. They carry the platform for the saturn 5 rocket which will place a full-scale scientific research unit in orbit around the earth next month.
A similar rocket will follow the next day. It'll carry three scientists who'll spend a month in space investigating the feasibility of permanent space stations.
