Background: Playing hard, brilliant rugby, Scotland beat England 14 points to give today (Saturday) in their Calcutta cup match at Murrayfield, Edinburgh, dashing any hopes England had of winning the international championship.

Scotland showed brilliant form from the start. Peter Brown Kicked a 45-yard penalty after three minutes and only six minutes later England were in trouble again.

After a ruck on the half-way line, Paterson cleared the ball to Turner and Scotland moved off smartly down field. Turner passed to Bigger who touched down a try after nine minutes. At half time the score was six points to nil in Scotland's favour.

In the second half, Scotland maintained their lead over England with some hard mid-field play. Then England were penalised in a ruck outside their 25 line and Peter Brown landed an easy goal to make it 9-nil for Scotland.

England retaliated briefly, and in an aggressive move into Scottish territory spearheaded by Hiller and Shackleton, spencer touched down for England after 70 minutes. Hiller converted comfortably.

Shortly after Scotland surged over the English line, but the try was disallowed and a scrum called. The ball came out in Scotland's favour and Roberton touched down from a pass by Paterson. The score, 12-5 to Scotland.

Then Brown kicked an easy penalty to bring the final score to 14-5, and the eager Murrayfield crowd swept down onto the field to congratulate the Scottish players for a brilliantly-fought game.
