Background: The world's men's amateur speed skating championship was won on Sunday (February 18) by Goeran Claeson of Sweden.
He took the title after wine in the 5,000 and 10,000 metre events at the European championship meeting in Deventer, Holland.
His title win was the highlight of a meeting marred by high winds, hail and rain. Thousands of avid spectators huddled under umbrellas to watch the skating.
Besides his two major wins, Claeson finished second to American Bill Lanigan in the 500 metres.
Another standout in the skating meeting was Stan Stensen of Norway, who came second to Claeson in the world championship. He took first place in the 1,500 metre event. Piet Kleine of Holland came third in the world title.
