ROLL ONE: Interview with Opposition leader, Shimon Peres (In English)
.Asked what he thought of Begin's trip to US and peace plan. He replied he felt there were some major mistakes in Begin's approach. Firstly, instead of trying to reach and understanding with the US on procedure of the negotiations, he should have tried very hard to reach an understanding about the content of the negotiations. The gap, he said, remains wide open and we are going to face a lot of problems. Also, it was not enough for the government to say it wanted peace. It must show willingness, if necessary for compromise. Thirdly, Israel should be ready to accept a partial agreement if full fledged peace was not possible.
.Asked about prospects for Geneva, he said he was afraid it would be a disappointment if the government was not prepared for a compromise.
.Asked about the US reaction to the official recognition of the three west bank settlements. Mr Peres said it was purely an Israeli decision. However, he personally didn't see the need for such a "dramatic step" at this time as it didn't serve any purpose: the settlements were in existence anyway.
